Date Night: Party Like It's...

by MER

In complete contrast to the last date, this date focuses on the simpler things in life. I find dates to be more fun when activities are involved. Add a little competition, an opportunity to coach (the old pool tutorial trick), and some alcohol and you are in for a great night. This dates reminds me a bit of college, but that’s okay, because lets be honest, college provided for some great nights. Put down your wine and your “let's go to bed before 10PM” attitude, and get ready to let loose.

THE FIRST

Georgia’s East Side BBQ: I literally stumbled upon this little place and I was so happy that I did. I went to school in the south and BBQ was an every week thing. In New York City, you have your standard, well- known locations, like Dino BBQ and Fette Sau, but you may not have heard of Georgia’s East Side BBQ. I ate so much I was in pain, but I couldn’t stop because everything here is so good. Obviously when it comes to BBQ, it is all about the meat. We got a little bit of everything and I think the ribs were my favorite. As for sides, mac and cheese is a standard for me, but we got some broccoli to pretend we were being healthy. The portions are quite large and you should split something to ensure you get to taste test as much as possible. They only offer beer in a can, and this place is tiny, with no frills. I seem to remember they don’t even have a bathroom. Once you finish up, head across the street to The Sixth Ward and play a game of pool to work off dinner.

THE SECOND

Blue Ribbon Beer Garden: Bar games are the best. They make drinking and dates more interesting. One of my new favorite spots is Blue Ribbon Beer Garden, hidden within the Thompson LES Hotel. This rooftop bar is known for its plethora of board games and good vibes. Communal tables and childhood games help to set the tone. A small selection of beer and wine is available, but the options are more than your average frat party (think Natty Lite) and include Brooklyn IPA and Duvel.

THE THIRD

The Meatball Shop: When is the last time you had a jello shot? Yeah, most likely you don’t remember because it was so long ago and if you are taking jello shots, the night is probably a blur. Did you know that The Meatball Shop offers late night jello shots? Yes, they do (excluding the 84 Stanton St location). I need a whole date focused around the Meatball Shop (to come soon), but stop in late night for an ice cream sandwich (my go to combo is the chocolate chip cookie and mint ice cream) and a jello shot. I assure you your night won’t end there.

Sometimes it's good to revert back to the good ole’ days and party like you are college- only sometimes. Enjoy! You can find a map of this date here

Date Night: Going Out > Staying In

by MER

It's still winter, but the sun has been poking through recently. After spending too many weekend nights indoors, ordering in and watching movies, avoiding the treacherous cold, it’s time to get out. No matter what you say, a date does not involve staying in. Here is your guide to getting back out on the town and having a real date, outside of your living room.

THE FIRST

Little Branch: Start the night off right with a cocktail that is mixed to perfection at Little Branch. This speak easy style cocktail bar is below the street (through a grungy looking brown door), dimly lit, and has the perfect ice for whatever drink you choose. Either pick an old fashion cocktail off the menu, that will be made with the freshest ingredients, or leave it up to the bartender to create something you will enjoy. Live jazz spices up the scene, Sunday through Thursday around 10:30PM.  Little Branch is cash only so come prepared.

THE SECOND

L’Artusi: You can’t go wrong at L’Artusi. From the extensive wine list to the absolutely perfect brussel sprouts, L’Artusi is the perfect date spot. Get a pasta and a meat or fish to share and a few vegetables on the side.  The spaghetti is simple and spicy and gnocchi is rich and filling. I recommend making a reservation, but there is always the option to dine at the bar if the wait it too long. No matter what you end up ordering, your meal will be amazing.

THE THIRD

Momofuku Milk Bar: After such a delicious meal, you may not have room for dessert (especially if you already tried the Hazelnut Chocolate Torta at L’Artusi). Even if you think you don’t, you must stop by Momofuku Milk Bar on your way home. Momofuku features non-traditional, yet exceptionally delicious desserts, such as Birthday Cake Truffles, Cereal Milk Soft serve, and a Compost Cookie. Trust me, go.

Holiday Inspired Date: Tis the Season

by MER

The holiday season is finally here and that means that your days can be filled with holiday-esque experiences that live up to the season. Looking for something special to do this week? See below.

THE FIRST

Burger Joint at The Parker Meridien: This is the burger joint that is hidden in the corner of The Parker Meridien under a neon sign. The burger here typically frequents the “Top Burgers in NYC” lists and unfortunately almost everyone knows about it. If you are taking the day off or just in town for the holidays, this is a good stop before heading outdoors for some holiday activities.

THE SECOND

Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting: This only happens once a year and it is probably something everyone should be a part of at least once in their lifetime. The tree lighting this year will take place on Wednesday, December 4th at 9PM but the festivities begin at 7PM. For the best view of the tree in all its glory, it is recommended that you arrive sometime between 3PM and 4PM to get a spot on either side of the rink on 50th or 49th street, directly in front of Saks Fifth Avenue facing 30 Rockefeller Plaza. For more tips on getting the most out of the iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting check out 10 Tips For Watching The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Live by Anthony Quintano. Don’t forget to bundle up- it could be cold out there.

THE THIRD

Serendipity 3: Now that you have witnessed in person what millions watch on television, it is most likely time to warm up. To continue with the holiday theme head over to Serendipity 3. If you’ve seen the movie, Serendipity, you know that they ice skate before heading for hot chocolate but you just did something equally if not more cool. Serendipity 3 is known for their desserts and more specifically their famous frozen hot chocolate. The wait can be pretty long, but maybe you will have a serendipitous holiday moment and it will all be worth it.

Date Night: Cozy Up

by MER

While New York seems very far away from a cozy cabin in the woods, where you can cuddle up next to a fire, there is a way to get close (or as close as it gets) to recreating this experience in the city. On those cold winter nights, head out to pretend you sitting around a campfire, outside your cabin, looking up at the stars with someone special.

THE FIRST

Henry’s EndTo get in the spirit, head over to Henry’s End for their annual Wild Game menu. This menu includes items like Gnocchi with Wild Boar Ragout, Venison, and Herb Crusted Elk Chops. Let someone else do the hunting and cooking- you can just pretend you spent your day in the woods. According to Yelp reviews, it can get crowded so either call ahead (718-834-1776) or make a reservation if you have a party of three or more.

44 Henry Street, Brooklyn Heights, New York 11201

Via TimeOut

THE SECOND

Black Mountain Wine HouseAfter filling up on game, head over to the Black Mountain Wine House, regarded as one of the most romantic date spots in Brooklyn. They only have wine and beer for drinks, but they do have a fireplace and it feels like a quaint little cottage.

415 Union Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231

THE THIRD

Camp: Finish up the night with a time old dessert- s’mores! If you are looking for a cozy, blast from the past, check out Camp. At camp you can not only get a cocktail, but you can also roast a marshmallow. What better way to cozy up to you new (or old) special someone? They even have Big Bunk Hunter so you can continue to pretend you’re not in New York.
