It’s been a VERY long time. Stay tune - plan to resume when the world resumes!
Day Date: Uncharted Territory i.e. Red Hook
Oh hey there. It’s been awhile. You should cut me a little slack because I’ve been busy. I worked in Toronto for a year, came back to New York, moved apartments, started a new job, and so forth. Don’t worry, I’ve obviously been eating and drinking just as much, I just haven’t been writing about it. But that’s all about to change (at least for now).
We are starting recommencing with a little known place that goes by the name “Red Hook.” If the only thought that comes to your mind when I say “Red Hook” is “IKEA,” you really need to get out more. Yes, it's not incredibly accessible by subway, but you can take almost every other mode of transportation to get there – bike, ferry, taxi, bus, or. your feet.
I must admit, I’m new to Red Hook. I’ve probably spent a total of 5 hours there, and one of those is when I ran through it, (frantically trying to jot down all of the places I must come back to try when I’m not a sweaty, tired mess). So, we are going to venture into uncharted territory together and I have a feeling we won’t be disappointed.
I’d save this one for a weekend, when you have the time to really explore and enjoy. Also, because I feel bad that I’ve been away for so long, I made this a full day with four stops instead of the usual three. You’re welcome.
THE FIRST
Fort Defiance: The biscuits got me interested and the Irish Coffee convinced me. Sometimes you don’t want a “drunk 20-somethings dancing on tables” brunch (not sure we ever wanted that). Sometimes you simply want a really good breakfast and I think that’s where Fort Defiance thrives. The brunch menu features eight main dishes and 12 side dishes. In addition, people rave about their Irish Coffee. To be honest, I had to google what exactly an Irish Coffee was. For your reference, it is hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, and topped with thick cream (according to Wikipedia). Can’t go wrong there, can you?

THE SECOND
Baked: What is the only thing to do after brunch? Get a sweet of course. To be fair, I think that pattern should be reserved for special occasions, but hey, you made it to Red Hook, you definitely deserve a treat after brunch. One look at the offerings at Baked and I was hooked (pun intended). Sweet and salty brownies, whoopie pies, donuts, and some incredible mutated hybrid of a cookie and brownie – there is something for everyone here. I’m not telling you that you have to eat it right away, but I do think you should get something (or three). Stash it for later if you have self-control, otherwise just get the goodness over with.

THE THIRD
Valentino Pier: Okay, so everyone boasts a good view – the Staten Island Ferry, Brooklyn Bridge, that adult entertainment club I walk past on the way to work every morning – but it’s always good to get a different perspective (don’t include the club in that reference please). I bet you’ve never heard of Valentino Pier, however I dare say it has one of the best views of the Statue of Liberty that you’ve never seen. Everyone loves a good New York City view, especially at sunrise or sunset and I promise this one will not disappoint.

THE (BONUS) FOURTH
Brooklyn Ice House: I would casually say that I am one of the biggest fans of drinking (strike that) being outside (okay, drinking too). Sometimes there really is nothing better than sitting outside on a warm day, with a drink in your hand. Beer just tastes better outside. You know I’m right. Brooklyn Ice House has a pretty standard beer garden outback, but its in Red Hook, so you have to try it on this adventure. Non-pretentious, super laid back, and has a fire pit, what’s not to like?

I just realized these places all pretty much exist on one street. Here’s to venturing out - just not that far. See a map of this date here.
Date Night: Party Like It's...
In complete contrast to the last date, this date focuses on the simpler things in life. I find dates to be more fun when activities are involved. Add a little competition, an opportunity to coach (the old pool tutorial trick), and some alcohol and you are in for a great night. This dates reminds me a bit of college, but that’s okay, because lets be honest, college provided for some great nights. Put down your wine and your “let's go to bed before 10PM” attitude, and get ready to let loose.
THE FIRST
Georgia’s East Side BBQ: I literally stumbled upon this little place and I was so happy that I did. I went to school in the south and BBQ was an every week thing. In New York City, you have your standard, well- known locations, like Dino BBQ and Fette Sau, but you may not have heard of Georgia’s East Side BBQ. I ate so much I was in pain, but I couldn’t stop because everything here is so good. Obviously when it comes to BBQ, it is all about the meat. We got a little bit of everything and I think the ribs were my favorite. As for sides, mac and cheese is a standard for me, but we got some broccoli to pretend we were being healthy. The portions are quite large and you should split something to ensure you get to taste test as much as possible. They only offer beer in a can, and this place is tiny, with no frills. I seem to remember they don’t even have a bathroom. Once you finish up, head across the street to The Sixth Ward and play a game of pool to work off dinner.

THE SECOND
Blue Ribbon Beer Garden: Bar games are the best. They make drinking and dates more interesting. One of my new favorite spots is Blue Ribbon Beer Garden, hidden within the Thompson LES Hotel. This rooftop bar is known for its plethora of board games and good vibes. Communal tables and childhood games help to set the tone. A small selection of beer and wine is available, but the options are more than your average frat party (think Natty Lite) and include Brooklyn IPA and Duvel.

THE THIRD
The Meatball Shop: When is the last time you had a jello shot? Yeah, most likely you don’t remember because it was so long ago and if you are taking jello shots, the night is probably a blur. Did you know that The Meatball Shop offers late night jello shots? Yes, they do (excluding the 84 Stanton St location). I need a whole date focused around the Meatball Shop (to come soon), but stop in late night for an ice cream sandwich (my go to combo is the chocolate chip cookie and mint ice cream) and a jello shot. I assure you your night won’t end there.

Sometimes it's good to revert back to the good ole’ days and party like you are college- only sometimes. Enjoy! You can find a map of this date here.
Date Night: It Ain't Cheap
Most of the time date nights don’t have to be expensive, overcomplicated, or even really well planned out. They can be simple, creative, and just provide a good environment for two people to get to know each other (better). However, sometimes, and once in a while, a full- on, all out, extravagant date night is absolutely necessary. Whether you are coming to New York City to celebrate a special occasion, or just want to have a romantic night away from home, this date is bound to impress.
THE FIRST
Bianca: New York is filled with some of the finest Italian restaurants and everyone has their own opinion on which is actually the best. One place that has come up more frequently than others is Bianca of the LES. Supposedly the wait at Bianca can be ridiculous however they send you next store to grab some drinks and dream of what is to come next. Highly recommended dishes include Tagliolini Ai Frutti Di Mare and the Lasagna. Nothing says romance like a good ol' "Lady and the Tramp" Italian meal.

THE SECOND
Apotheke: Hidden off Canal Street and disguised among Chinese restaurants lies Apotheke (pronunciation currently under debate). Apotheke is a traditional speakeasy, noticeable only by its large security guard who stands on the steps outside. Inside, is a dimly lit, yet vibrant room, centered on the medicinal bar. While the theme might be a little unauthentic (since speakeasies are currently the thing), the cocktails are so unique, and lovely that you will definitely be impressed. Although speakeasies are naturally romantic, it definitely wouldn't hurt to throw in a little Violet Hour (a drink in the “Aphrodisiac” section) to set the night off right.

THE THIRD
The Broome: Sometimes you stumble upon a place that is too good to be true and you cannot believe it actually exists. Enter The Broome. After a friend of mine sent me a picture of this picturesque hotel, I looked in to it and have determined that this is the perfect place in New York to spend that night away from home. If it’s a big night or you just want to remind someone that they’re still the one, book a room at this gem. The courtyard is quaint and the balconies off the pent house look like they may be some of the only peaceful locations left in Manhattan.

Sometimes romance requires a grand gesture at a high price point, and this is it. Enjoy. See a map of this date here.
Date Night: One Street Wonder
I recently stumbled upon 26th street between 6th Avenue and Broadway for a friend’s birthday. Who knew one block could possess so much goodness? Weeknight dates are hard to plan, because it has to be simple and quick enough to make sure you make it in to work the next day. However, you also don’t want it to be lame. Well, my friend, you are in luck, because 26th street has got everything you need.
THE FIRST
Maysville: Walking down 26th street from Broadway, Maysville will be on the right hand side- a quant little restaurant/bar. Boasting its diverse whiskey collection and southern cooking with a modern touch, Maysville is the sister of Char. No 4 located on Smith Street in Brooklyn. There is first come, first serve bar seating as well as table service, so whether you want a quick whiskey on the rocks or want to indulge in some grits or oysters, Maysville's got it all. Week nights get crazy crowded so keep your group small (its technically a date, but still) and try to get there early if you can.

THE SECOND
Melt Shop: The Melt Shop has many locations, but lucky for you there is one on 26th street. I don’t know many people who don’t enjoy a good grilled cheese, especially a gourmet grilled cheese (yes that is a thing). It's simple, it's low key, and it’s served with tots. It also says that you are trying just hard enough. Most people seem to think the Truffle Melt or Buttermilk Fried Chicken is the best, but we’ll let you figure that one out for yourself. I’m drooling just looking at the menu (attractive, yes I know).

THE THIRD
Flatiron Hall: Part restaurant, part beer hall, Flatiron Hall has something for everyone. Grab a seat at the bar upstairs or head down stairs to the beer cellar. I recently had an Old Fashion here and it was the best I have had in recent memory. It's causal and full of Yo-Pros (young professionals- love that abbreviation). They also serve a massive soft pretzel with a great beer cheese dip. Grab a nightcap, or two, and unwind from a long day. You’ll be glad you did.
